Vintage Aït Bou Ichaouen Rug / 395 x 177 cm

This vintage Aït Bou Ichaouen rug begins its story on a ground of time-softened magenta, a color worn by years and light. The composition unfolds in two distinct movements, first, a precise network of hexagons, each enclosing a symbolic mark, like coded messages across a tribal map. Then, quite suddenly, the rhythm shifts, harlequin-like diamonds cascade in vertical alignment, creating a surprising counterpoint that feels both spontaneous and controlled.

The palette speaks of desert warmth and mountain air, sunset tones of warm orange and shifting yellows, faded lavender, ivory, and charcoal. These hues bring both softness and clarity, while the dark selvedges and grouped short fringes ground the edges like punctuation marks on a scroll.

Knotted in a medium pile of wool, this piece is a masterful expression of duality, precision balanced with improvisation, order disrupted by movement. It’s a visual rhythm that invites the eye to wander, pause and begin again.
