Vintage Aït Bou Ichaouen Rug / 405 x 173 cm
This exceptional vintage rug from the Aït Bou Ichaouen tribe of the eastern High Atlas is a visual dialogue between structure and symbolism, spontaneity and intention. Woven with a masterful sense of rhythm and proportion, it reflects the distinctive style of the region bordering the Sahara, where geometry meets narrative.
The base sings in warm tones of terracotta, burnt orange, and soft coral, while crisp white, pale lavender and cool plum provide refreshing contrast. Deep black lines cut through the warmth, grounding the composition and lending a sense of graphic precision.
The composition is dominated by repeating lozenges filled with classic checkerboard patterns. Scattered Amazigh symbols, such as diamonds and angular glyphs, break the repetition with layers of meaning, echoes of tribal identity.
Despite its abstract appearance, the layout is remarkably structured, an embodiment of the Aït Bou Ichaouen weaving philosophy, where symmetry, repetition, and improvisation coexist in harmony.
