Vintage Moroccan Wedding blanket / 205 x 115 cm

This older vintage Moroccan wedding blanket, or handira, carries with it the quiet poetry of Berber wedding traditions. Once woven by women of the Middle Atlas for a bride’s dowry, it was draped across her shoulders on the wedding day, a garment of blessing, fertility and protection. Its textures shimmered not only with beauty but also with meaning, believed to ward off the evil eye and reflect light back toward a life of harmony.

The surface reveals a tender rhythm of weaving, alternating flatwoven stripes with shaggy pile tufting that lends softness and depth. While many handira are embellished with sequins, this example speaks in a gentler voice, its woolly bands embodying a purity of form and texture. Tassels at the edges echo the hand of its maker, a final touch of intimacy.

Its tones are soothing and understated, creamy ivory, softened beiges, like the hush before vows are spoken. Both rooted in heritage and timeless in design, it is a textile of cultural resonance and quiet elegance, seamlessly bridging its ceremonial origins with contemporary living.
