Vintage Moroccan Boucherouite Rug / 190 x 120 cm

A vibrant expression of Amazigh artistry, this vintage Boucherouite rug captures the essence of Morocco’s rural weaving traditions. Emerging in the mid-20th century, Boucherouite weavings arose from necessity, when wool became scarce, women began repurposing scraps of fabric, old clothing and leftover textiles. What began as improvisation blossomed into an entirely new form of artistry, tactile, colorful and unbound by convention.

This piece unfolds like a patchwork quilt of memories. Its rectangular compartments hold a joyful variety of geometric motifs (diamonds, chevrons and hourglass figures), symbols of fertility, protection and the natural world, reimagined in a freeform, playful manner. The kaleidoscopic palette bursts with bright red, electric blue, emerald green, vivid yellow, purple, black, and white. At its heart, a vivid central panel stands out, framed by bold contrasts that radiate movement and spontaneity.

With its shaggy surface, tactile depth, and uninhibited use of color, the rug embodies the soul of Boucherouite weaving, resourceful, symbolicnand unapologetically joyful.
