Vintage Moroccan Boucherouite Rug / 245 x 100 cm
This vintage Moroccan Boucherouite rug is a bold and imaginative work of folk art, where fragments of everyday life were transformed into vibrant woven tapestries. Handwoven by Amazigh women using recycled textiles, it embodies the spirit of resourcefulness and free expression that defines this tradition.
The surface is richly textured, with tufts of varying length creating depth and a painterly quality. Unlike strictly geometric examples, this piece leans toward the pictorial and abstract. Its composition unfolds in broad horizontal bands and framed sections, each carrying its own rhythm and palette. At the top, nested squares form a labyrinth-like motif, an Amazigh symbol of passage and protection, while other sections drift into more abstract arrangements, like landscapes recalled through memory.
A spectrum of colors moves across the rug: cobalt blue, fuchsia, orange, lilac, turquoise, black, green, yellow and warm earthy browns. Bright, high-contrast tones gradually soften into muted bands, giving the rug a sense of movement and storytelling. The result is a piece that feels both lively and grounded, spontaneous yet deeply rooted in tradition.
Beyond its striking surface, this boucherouite rug embodies resilience and artistry, woven from remnants, but carrying a narrative as rich as any finely knotted carpet. It is a unique creation that bridges utility, self-expression and cultural heritage.
