Vintage Moroccan Wedding blanket / 250 x 130 cm
This vintage Moroccan wedding blanket, or handira, is a luminous expression of Amazigh artistry and tradition. Woven by women of the Middle Atlas for a bride to wear on her wedding day, it embodies layers of meaning, blessings woven into every thread, sequins to catch the light and ward off misfortune and motifs that whisper of fertility, protection and prosperity.
The textile reveals an exquisite interplay of craft. Alternating flatwoven stripes and shaggy pile bands form its foundation, while embroidered geometric motifs march rhythmically across its surface, inspired by timeless Amazigh symbols. Scattered sequins shimmer gently, their reflections evoking both beauty and spiritual safeguarding. This marriage of weaving, tufting, embroidery and embellishment demonstrates the weaver’s mastery and imagination.
Its tones are rooted in purity and balance, an ivory and beige base, enriched by decorative bands of black, red, green and blue. The contrast creates both vibrancy and harmony, a dialogue between restraint and celebration.
More than a dowry textile, this handira is both talisman and artwork,an heirloom that carries protective symbolism while radiating artistry. Draped across a bed or displayed as a wall piece, it transforms any space with the spirit of Moroccan tradition and the brilliance of its craftsmanship.
