Vintage Moroccan Boucherouite Rug / 232 x 144 cm
This striking Boucherouite rug embodies the artistry and playful creativity of Amazigh weaving. Born from necessity and resourcefulness, Boucherouite rugs were crafted by women in rural Morocco using scraps of textiles and wool remnants. What began as practical household pieces became vibrant works of art, filled with cultural memory and expressive freedom.
The rug is woven from a patchwork of recycled fibers, cotton, wool leftovers and synthetics, giving it a soft, plush texture and a dense pile that enhances the brilliance of its colors.
At its heart lie two large diamond medallions, built from checkerboard-like squares in a rainbow of hues, symbolizing harmony and protection. Scattered around are smaller eye-like motifs in red and white, guardians against the evil eye, along with abstract figures and tiny stars that enliven the field. The layout is symmetrical yet playful, balancing tradition with improvisation.
What makes this rug especially radiant is its luminous azure blue ground, a bold canvas for the multicolored motifs in green, red, yellow, white, purple and black. The edges are framed with accents of green and yellow, anchoring the composition like a glowing border. The result is a piece of energy and joy, almost like a mosaic floating in a sea of blue.
A true example of necessity blossoming into beauty, this rug radiates both vitality and protection, carrying Amazigh symbols into a world of imaginative freedom.
