Extraordinary Vintage Azilal Rug / 253 x 137 cm
Rug Code: MR395
This extraordinary older Azilal rug from Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains is a rare example of how Berber women blend spontaneity, symbolism and artistry into a single woven story. Its dual composition, freeform abstraction above and a richly ornamented border below, creates a striking visual dialogue between creativity and grounding.
The upper field dances with scattered motifs: diamonds, lozenges and abstract tribal figures, each placed freely across the luminous ivory wool. This playful, non-linear arrangement reflects the expressive essence of Azilal weaving, where each design is improvised, personal and symbolic.
Anchoring the piece, the lower section shifts into a broad ornamental panel, a radiant ochre ground filled with a chain of large lozenges. These repeating diamonds symbolize femininity, continuity and protection, giving balance to the otherwise spontaneous composition. The fringes, woven from both natural and dark wool, add an artisanal touch, completing the piece with raw authenticity.
Its palette is radiant and joyful with vibrant pinks, reds and oranges soften into sunset shades of ochre, peach and faded rose at the base, with accents of black providing contrast. This harmony of bold and faded tones gives the rug a warm, lived-in beauty and timeless presence.
With its dynamic interplay of freeform symbols and structured border, this Azilal rug is a true collector’s piece, alive with heritage, storytelling and individuality.
