Vintage Azilal Rug / 346 x 187 cm
This vintage Azilal rug embodies the essence of Berber minimalism, where symbolism and geometry merge into a refined, timeless design. Handwoven from natural wool in the High Atlas Mountains, it radiates both purity and meaning.
The composition centers on the classic diamond lattice, a pattern that has been passed down for generations as a symbol of protection, fertility and the cycle of life. Each lozenge is finely outlined in black, set against the luminous ivory field of undyed wool. A single black dot anchors every diamond, creating rhythm across the rug while adding a layer of symbolic depth, often interpreted as seeds of life or protective eyes.
Its restrained palette, just ivory and a deep dark brown, enhances the rug’s strong graphic quality. This monochrome harmony makes it an incredibly versatile piece, equally at home in modern interiors as in traditional settings.
A closer look reveals thoughtful finishing details: one end is adorned with natural wool fringes, casually knotted to retain an organic, handmade character. The opposite end is anchored by a flat-woven kilim band in dark wool, patterned with subtle geometric motifs. This not only reinforces the structure but also highlights the weaver’s artistry beyond the pile design.
Both symbolic and sophisticated, this Azilal rug is a woven guardian, its rhythmic lattice offering harmony and timeless beauty to the home.
