Vintage Moroccan Boucherouite Rug / 185 x 105 cm
This older small Boucherouite rug carries both the charm of improvisation and the quiet patina of age. Like all Boucherouite weavings, it was created by Amazigh women in rural Morocco at a time when wool was scarce, using scraps of recycled textiles from daily life. Originally meant for personal use, spread across the floor, a bed or as a protective cover, it was never intended for trade. Yet today, these modest textiles are celebrated as vibrant expressions of cultural storytelling.
The weaving combines pile with flatwoven sections, a creative use of limited materials that reveals both economy and ingenuity. Time has softened its surface, leaving behind a tactile, weathered beauty that speaks of long use and authenticity. The motifs are scattered and asymmetrical (lozenges, cross-like figures, star medallions) expressions of Amazigh symbolism woven with a free and highly personal hand.
Its palette is equally resourceful and evocative, muted earth tones of cream, brown, and beige serve as a ground for sudden bursts of fuchsia, turquoise, neon pink and electric blue. The interplay of subdued background with bright accents creates a painterly, almost abstract composition.
This piece is more than a rug, it is a fragment of lived history, a textile memory woven from recycled fabrics, softened with age and today valued as an artwork in its own right.
