Vintage Moroccan Wedding blanket / 164 x 105 cm

This older vintage Moroccan wedding blanket (handira) is a delicate textile of heritage and grace, handwoven in the Middle Atlas Mountains for a bride’s wedding day. Worn draped across the shoulders, its soft shimmer and textures symbolized blessings, fertility and protection, transforming the bride into a radiant figure surrounded by woven prayers.
The blanket is structured in alternating flatwoven ivory and sandy beige stripes, enriched with rows of long, shaggy pile bands that ripple softly across the surface. These tufts add both warmth and a tactile beauty, catching the light in gentle contrast with the smoother woven ground. Narrow decorative bands in deep indigo and black run lengthwise through the textile, intricately embroidered with small geometric motifs in red, green, and white, tiny protective symbols infused with meaning.
The overall palette is warm and soothing, natural ivory and beige dominate, while the darker embroidered lines and jewel-like accents punctuate the surface with subtle rhythm. Its harmony of softness and fine detailing makes this handira a treasure of both cultural symbolism and timeless decorative appeal.
This piece embodies the intimacy of weaving tradition, where every stripe, tuft and stitch was made by hand, carrying protective symbolism into the bride’s new life. Today, it remains a textile of great beauty, equally cherished as a cultural heirloom and as a refined decorative accent for the modern home.
